The story unfolds in an ordinary high school, revolving around a group of teenagers afflicted with “chuunibyou,” a term referring to adolescents who excessively indulge in self-created fantasy worlds and express themselves in unrealistic manners.
Main Characters:
-
Tomoya Fujisaki: The protagonist, a first-year high school student. During his junior high days, he was a chuunibyou patient who styled himself as the “Dark Flame Master.” Determined to leave this dark past behind, he strives to start anew in high school by concealing his former behavior. However, on the first day of school, he inadvertently utters his usual chuunibyou lines on the rooftop, overheard by his classmate Rikka Takanashi.
-
Rikka Takanashi: The female lead, a first-year high school student and an active chuunibyou patient. She calls herself the “Evil Eye of the King,” sports an eyepatch over her right eye, and binds her left arm with a bandage. She takes an interest in Tomoya and forcibly enters into a “contract” with him, demanding that he become her “companion.”
-
Morishima Shinka: The female class representative, a slender and beautiful girl with an outgoing personality. She’s the most approachable girl in class. In reality, she too was once a chuunibyou patient but has since graduated from it, hence disliking being called “Morinokami.”
-
Dekomori Satsuki: An active chuunibyou patient who sees herself as the “Thunder God Hammer User” and serves as Rikka’s attendant. With a headstrong personality, she often engages in reckless acts.
-
Nanami Shichika: Tomoya’s classmate from junior high, the only one who understood him during his chuunibyou phase. She later transferred to Morishima’s middle school and reappears in front of Tomoya during his second year of high school.
Synopsis:
After entering high school, Tomoya aims to completely shed the shadow of his chuunibyou past. However, Rikka’s appearance disrupts his plans. She forcibly enters into a contract with Tomoya, insisting he become her “companion” and embark on a quest to find the “Invisible Boundary Line.” Throughout this journey, Tomoya must navigate Rikka’s eccentric demands and behaviors while also facing the opinions of their classmates.
As the story progresses, Tomoya and Rikka’s relationship evolves. From initial strangeness and awkwardness, they grow familiar and understanding, eventually developing mutual affection and openness. They encounter various moments filled with humor, touching scenes, sweetness, sorrow, confusion, conflict, and reconciliation, ultimately becoming each other’s romantic partners.
Moreover, the narrative weaves in subplots involving other characters, such as the conflict and reconciliation between Morishima Shinka and Dekomori Satsuki, and Nanami Shichika’s unrequited love and eventual letting go of Tomoya. These storylines enrich the plot and showcase the complex emotions and growth journey of adolescent teenagers.
